I am sure the year after this they will go the same thing in Group AAA.

Re: VHSL makes changes
This will most likely keep Richlands, Tazewell and Graham in AA.
Edit: particularly if they start doing this in other sports.

Cant see why this would affect Richlands, Tazewell and Graham.

Tazewell and Graham could drop down to Group A but choose to play up and Richlands is just above the cutoff. There has been much discussion here (and elsewhere) about them all dropping down as soon as Richlands' enrollment is low enough.
There is a desire by some administrators and coaches at those schools to stay in AA and having divisional play would prevent them from having to compete with the Pulaskis and Salems of the world in the playoffs.
I did read in another story later yesterday that VHSL Director Ken Tilley said the AA prinicpals voted against expanding divisional play to other sports, at least for now.
Translated: "The VHSL isn't for it outside of football and basketball because we can't make as much money off other sports".

Re: VHSL makes changes
From what I've heard, most of AAA is satisfied with the current setup. If others wanted to go to a four or five class system, they could just take the current AA and A groups and divide them into three or four classes, leaving AAA alone. Just allow AAA regions the option of having expanded playoffs.
I'm not sure why the VHSL is so dead-set on making equal thirds the classification standard. It used to be based on set enrollment points.

I just dont see it keeping any of them AA. I thought most of the reason was due to travel for the schools mentioned above to drop. The division splits doesnt do anything to help out in travel. You all may be right but I just dont see it.

Re: VHSL makes changes
RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia High School League voted Thursday to expand its boys' and girls' basketball tournament for the second year in a row.
Beginning next year, the VHSL will split Group AA into two divisions, just as it did with Group A this year, executive director Ken Tilley said at VCU's Siegel Center.
There are 24 games this year being played at VCU, the tournament site for the last five years. The number of games will increase to 30 next year.
